LCO BULLETIN OF 20 MAY 2023
SYOGM ROCK IMPACT MILL
OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES
AND TOOL REQUIREMENTS
FOR ON-SITE FINE GOLD RECOVERY
This bulletin provides operational guidelines and essential tool
requirements for the SYOGM Rock Impact Mill, designed to enhance fine
gold recovery in on-site processing. It builds upon the Kassanda Rapid
Rock Verification for Gold (LCO Bulletin 26 April 2023) and aims to
support efficient, safe, and sustainable gold recovery operations.
In reference to KASSANDA RAPID ROCK VERIFICATION FOR GOLD, LCO
BULLETIN OF 26 APRIL 2023, here it is described how to use SYOGM Rock
Impact Mill to recover fine gold.
The SYOGM Rock Impact Mill is a mobile, high-efficiency impact
plate-flail rock mill with a capacity of 500 kg to 900 kg. Designed to
liberate gold by crushing and milling ore to near-optimum fineness, it
is lightweight and portable—easily carried by two people or
transported with a wheelbarrow. In many cases, it can even fit in the
trunk of a car, making it ideal for on-site, batch or continuous
processing of gold-bearing ores.
Powered by a 7 HP engine or motor, the mill requires minimal
maintenance and operates efficiently with water flowing through the
system to enhance gold recovery.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
- Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE): gloves, safety
goggles, ear protection, and closed-toe boots.
- Ensure the machine is turned off and cooled before performing any
maintenance.
- Never operate the mill without proper water flow—dry running can
damage internal components and contaminate workers and cause
silicosis. Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhaling fine
particles of crystalline silica, leading to inflammation and
scarring of lung tissue.
- Keep children and unauthorized personnel away from the operating
area.
- Use proper fuel handling procedures—no smoking near fuel storage or
engine.
- Regularly inspect flail plates and belts for wear; replace
immediately if cracked or worn.
ESSENTIAL TOOLS AND WEAR PARTS FOR THE SYOGM ROCK IMPACT MILL OPERATOR
Wear parts for the SYOGM Rock Impact Mill are flail impact
plates. These should be supplied in sufficient quantities to support
continuous operation for weeks or months. They are either manufactured
by Start Your Own Gold Mine (SYOGM) or can be produced by the operator
following our detailed instructions.
To ensure safe, efficient, and continuous operation, the operator of
the SYOGM Rock Impact Mill must have the following tools and
consumables readily available at all times:
1. General Hand Tools:
- Spanners (various sizes)
- Pliers (including needle-nose and adjustable)
- Screwdrivers (flathead and others)
- Hammers (ball-peen or claw)
- Other common maintenance tools as required
2. Sealing and Maintenance Supplies:
- Tying rubbers (for securing hoses and connections)
- Small, flexible hose (to seal openings and prevent water leakage
from the machine)
3. Lubrication Equipment:
- Grease gun and appropriate grease
- Engine oil (if the machine uses an internal combustion engine)
4. Fuel and Fluid Handling:
- Petrol or diesel jerrycans or storage tanks
- Two funnels: one designated for oil, one for fuel
- Jerrycan for collecting and disposing of used oil
5. Water Supply System:
- HDPE pipes or suction hoses (for delivering water to the machine)
- Water tank or bilge pump
- Reliable water source (e.g., borehole, reservoir, or municipal
supply)
OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE
1. Place the mill on a stable, level surface. We usually place it on
timbers fixed in the ground; if no professional workspace is
available, it must be placed on a metal stand professionally
mounted on concrete to minimize vibrations.
2. Connect water supply using HDPE hose to ensure continuous flow into
the mill.
3. Prime the engine (if using petrol/diesel) and start the machine.
4. Feed gold-bearing rock (max size: 5 cm) into the hopper gradually.
5. Collect slurry in a trough or pan for panning or sluicing.
6. Shut down the machine after use, drain water, and perform routine
checks.
7. Always log working hours of the machine and any maintenance.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
- Daily: Check water flow, inspect flail plates for wear, check oil
level.
- Weekly: Lubricate bearings with grease, inspect belts for tension
and wear.
- Monthly: Replace flail plates if worn beyond 50% thickness, clean
internal chamber.
- Quarterly: Inspect engine (if applicable), replace air filter, check
fuel lines.
ENVIRONMENTAL & REGULATORY NOTES
- Operators must comply with Uganda’s Mining Act and Environmental
Management Act.
- Use water responsibly—recycle or treat slurry before disposal.
- Avoid open burning of used oil; dispose of waste properly.
- Register with the relevant mining authority for legal operation.
