The Elephant Bee Hive Project in Katojo, Rubuguri, district of Kisoro, Uganda
The Elephant Bee Hive Project aimed to place beehives as a natural, living fence to prevent elephants from exiting Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, thereby saving people’s crops. However, this idea proved impractical because many of these hives were abandoned by both their bees and maintainers; thus the project is nonfunctional and requires skilled personnel for operation.
We have developed our own Elephant Defense Project in which we advise planting chili peppers around crops to deter elephants. Additionally, we informed rangers from Uganda Wildlife Authority that they could use elephant dung collected elsewhere within the forest as a deterrent against nighttime exits by these animals.
Implementing this requires funding and investment; however, our role is limited to providing advice.
